God did not create evil, but He does allow evil. If God had not allowed for the possibility of evil, both mankind and angels would be serving God out of obligation, not choice. He did not want “robots” that simply did what He wanted them to do because of their “programming.” God allowed for the possibility of evil so that we could genuinely have a free will and choose whether or not we wanted to be evil or not be evil. Just for comparison, love is not real unless we are given the choice to not love. This is a KJV Bible study guide.
Many like to ask why God allows evil to exist? Usually, they deny God exists on one hand, but, then expect everything to be perfect without Him. These many are ignorant of where evil originates.
In any case, where does evil originate? What acts are considered to be evil? See the following verses for the answers, (this is not an all inclusive list, man is very inventive when it comes to evil).
Mark 7:21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
Mark 7:22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
Mark 7:23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.
Some of the many pertinent verses on “evil”: Psalm 7:14, 28:3, 37:9, 73:7; Proverbs 3:7, 8:13, 12:20; Isaiah 5:20, 32:6; John 3:20; Romans 2:8-12, 12:21; 2 Timothy 2:22; James 1:13-14.
Evil (shortened KJV dictionary definition follows): Having bad qualities of a moral kind; wicked; corrupt; perverse; wrong; as evil thoughts; evil deeds; evil speaking; an evil generation.
Some synonyms for “evil” include: wicked, bad, wrong, immoral, sinful, foul, vile, dishonorable, corrupt, iniquitous, depraved, reprobate, villainous, nefarious, vicious, malicious. Most all humans would agree that evil is described here fairly well.
Food for thought:
*God existed before humans did, right? I hope that you know that, He created us.
*Did evil exist before He created us? In other words, can evil exist without creating us? I don't believe so. I believe evil is an act, it requires an action, a deed, it ends in a result, etc. It is not something that can exist by itself; you can't put it in a container and give it away; it's not an object. It is very similar to hate in many respects. You can't put hate in a container and give it away, but, a human can act in a hateful or evil manner.
Strong's Concordance Hebrew (H) and Greek (G) definitions of “evil” follow:
H7451 = rah; bad or (as noun) evil (natural or moral):—adversity, affliction, bad, calamity, displease(-ure), distress, evil((-favouredness), man, thing), exceedingly, great, grief(-vous), harm, heavy, hurt(-ful), ill (favoured), mark, mischief(-vous), misery, naught(-ty), noisome, not please, sad(-ly), sore, sorrow, trouble, vex, wicked(-ly, -ness, one), worse(-st), wretchedness, wrong. (Including feminine raaah; as adjective or noun.)
H7489 = raw-ah'; a primitive root; properly, to spoil (literally, by breaking to pieces); figuratively, to make (or be) good for nothing, i.e. bad (physically, socially or morally):—afflict, associate selves (by mistake for 7462), break (down, in pieces), displease, (be, bring, do) evil (doer, entreat, man), show self friendly (by mistake for 7462), do harm, (do) hurt, (behave self, deal) ill, indeed, do mischief, punish, still, vex, (do) wicked (doer, -ly), be (deal, do) worse.
G2549 = kak-ee'-ah; badness, i.e. (subjectively) depravity, or (actively) malignity, or (passively) trouble:—evil, malice(-iousness), naughtiness, wickedness.
G4190 = pon-ay-ros'; hurtful, i.e. evil (properly, in effect or influence, and thus differing from, which refers rather to essential character, as well as from, which indicates degeneracy from original virtue); figuratively, calamitous; also (passively) ill, i.e. diseased; but especially (morally) culpable, i.e. derelict, vicious, facinorous; neuter (singular) mischief, malice, or (plural) guilt; masculine (singular) the devil, or (plural) sinners:—bad, evil, grievous, harm, lewd, malicious, wicked(-ness).
Psalm 34:14 Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.
Proverbs 8:13 The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate. (Not a good idea to do something God hates)!
