Gene Therapy for Your Eyes
The human eye is a particularly promising area for gene therapy because it’s easy to see and gain access to, and it has immune privilege, meaning the body is less likely to reject the new cells introduced during gene therapy treatment. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the U.S. FDA has approved a gene therapy treatment for an inherited condition that can cause blindness. Luxturna, from Spark Therapeutics, is the first gene therapy treatment approved in the United States for an inherited eye disease called Leber congenital amaurosis. The disease begins in infancy and progresses slowly, eventually causing complete blindness as the retinal cells die.
