The Unexpected Origins of Gamification
Our story began in 1896 when S&H introduced Green Stamps, a customer loyalty program that rewarded shoppers with stamps redeemable for merchandise. Little did they know, they were setting the stage for a revolution in engagement and motivation.
Fast forward to 1908, and we see the Boy Scouts introducing their badge system, turning skill acquisition into a rewarding, game-like experience. By 1973, Charles Coonradt was exploring how game principles could enhance workplace productivity in his book “The Game of Work.”
The digital age brought new possibilities. In 1978, MUD1 (Multi-User Dungeon) introduced the concept of shared online gaming spaces, a precursor to the interconnected digital experiences we enjoy today.
But it wasn’t until 2002 that Nick Pelling coined the term “gamification,” giving a name to this powerful approach to engagement and motivation.
On October 8–9, 2024, the Global Skill Development Council (GSDC) is hosting a two-day event that promises to revolutionize how we approach Learning and Development (L&D).
