Empty possessions!

Empty possessions!
Author unknown.

Ecclesiastes 2:11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.

The writer of Ecclesiastes points to the difference between believing in God intellectually and fearing (revering) God, which is the beginning of wisdom. Throughout the book, we see that life not surrendered to God is without meaning. This passage specifically points out this truth.

Solomon had vast wealth. Early in his reign he built the temple as God directed and then he built many buildings for himself. He planted beautiful gardens, trees, and vineyards that produced fruit. The water works added to productivity and beauty. He had large herds of cattle and flocks. Servants were added. Financial wealth abounded. And music gave great pleasure.

Solomon had joy in the work itself. But when he reviewed everything he attained and the work he had done, “all was vanity”. He had failed to achieve anything of eternal value.

Thus we see that materialism—work, pleasure, wealth—brings nothing of lasting worth if it is not given completely to God.

My words follow:

What this is saying to me is that earthly, material wealth is temporary only; we came into this world naked and we leave naked. Our earthly possessions can’t be taken with us. Is this saying that it is wrong to be materially rich? No! If God blesses someone in that way, fabulous. Regardless of what ones material wealth is, support the true doctrines of Christ.

Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Ecclesiastes 3:13 And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God.

Ecclesiastes 5:15 As he came forth of his mother's womb, naked shall he return to go as he came, and shall take nothing of his labour, which he may carry away in his hand.

(You came into this world naked, and you leave it the same way, naked. Meaning, there are no luggage racks on coffins; you can't take earthly things [anything you can carry in your hands] with you, such as money, etc. to heaven. See Psalm 49:17 also).

2 John 1:9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.
2 John 1:10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:

2 John 1:11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds. (Tithe correctly; support Christ”s doctrines only).
